Arts in Crisis: A Kennedy Center Initiative
The initiative is a response to the nationwide economic downturn and its threat to arts organizations throughout the United States. The current economic climate has reduced earned and contributed income, decimated endowments, and has left many organizations struggling for survival. The program, open to non-profit 501(c)(3) performing arts organizations, provides free and confidential counsel in fundraising, board management, budgeting, marketing, and other areas pertinent to maintaining a vital performing arts organization during a troubled economy. Kennedy Center senior staff and a network of senior arts managers from around the country volunteer their time to serve as confidential mentors, assisting imperiled organizations through e-mail, phone calls, and in-person visits. Since its inception in February 2009, the initiative has consulted 760 organizations with the volunteer services of nearly 140 mentors.
